At Scar Healing Institute, we are often asked how harmful dairy is for your acne. How much damage can a bite of ice cream or a glass of milk really cause?  The truth, of course, is that it depends on your genetics, skin type, ethnicity, and more. However, the science on this topic has gained tremendous momentum over the years.

Cow’s milk contains whey and casein, two proteins that stimulate growth hormone production in the drinker. The uptick in growth hormone production subsequently leads to the production of a hormone called IGF-1, causing inflammation. And inflammation is just a fancy word for redness and swelling, which is really what acne is.

By avoiding dairy, however, you can prevent these outbreaks. There are plenty of tasty alternatives to dairy, such as soy, almond, and oat milk. Acne scars should not be treated until your active acne is under control: thus, adopting a skin-healthy diet is an important precursor.

Here’s to your first step towards achieving clear skin and a refreshing air of confidence.

Sincerely,

The Scar Healing Institute
