The Weird World of Retinoids:

We have prepared a guide for you that will unlock the Power of Retinoids for Your Skin:

When it comes to achieving that healthy, youthful looking skin, there are few products which have been able to compete with the illustrious class of compounds known as retinoids. These skincare superheroes are hyped-up for good reason. In this post, we’ll explore the world of retinoids, the different types available, and how to choose the one for your unique skin needs.

Let’s dive in!

What Are Retinoids?

Retinoids are a group of chemical compounds derived from the vitamin known as Vitamin A, a vital nutrient for good skin health. These compounds work their magic–yes, it’s truly magical–through increasing what we call cell “turnover.” In simple terms, retinoids tell us to produce new skin cells (to replace the old ones) at a much faster rate than would occur without the retinoid. Furthermore, this class of chemical compounds stimulates collagen production, working to rid of some of those fine lines and wrinkles that have been implicated in aging. In short, retinoids can help smooth wrinkles, fade dark spots, and prevent breakouts–a TRIPLE threat for your skin’s health and appearance.

Let’s just say it’s hard to beat the work of retinoids!

Breaking Things Down: Types of Retinoids:

Retinol:

This is the gentlest form of retinoid. While retinoids are typically very harsh on the skin in comparison to other skincare products, retinol is a great place to start off in order to allow your body to adjust to this class of compounds. This is often available over-the-counter. It’s an excellent choice for beginners or especially those who have more sensitive skin. Applying smaller amounts to your skin and not doing so daily is a great way to gradually work your way up to avoid skin irritation

Retinaldehyde (Retinal):

A step up in potency from retinol, retinaldehyde is still relatively gentle on the spectrum of retinoids. Retinaldehyde is able to provide some great noticeable results without the intensity of a prescription retinoid. In fact, it is the strongest non-prescription retinoid out there. Since it is much closer to the most active form of retinoid (to be discussed below) compared to retinol, the effects of this form of retinoid are remarkable!

Prescription Retinoids (Retinoic Acid):

These are the HEAVY-hitters when it comes to the retinoid world. These would certainly require a dermatologist’s prescription. Things like Tretinoin ®, Tazarotene ®, and Adapalene ® are common brands of this type of retinoid. While they can deliver more significant results, this form of retinoid commonly causes more irritation, especially in the initial stages of usage. That is, if you were to start off with a prescription retinoid–in comparison to retinol or retinaldehyde–you are much more likely to experience irritation and redness at the site(s) of application. This form of retinoid is IDEAL for tackling that deep, stubborn acne, deep wrinkles, and even hyperpigmentation.

Choosing the RIGHT Retinoid for YOU:

Skin Sensitivity: if your skin is particularly sensitive, consider starting off with an over-the-counter retinoid like retinol or retinaldehyde

Skin Concerns: tailor your choice to YOUR specific concerns; retinol and retinaldehyde typically can address the mild to moderate signs of aging, whereas prescription retinoids are better suited for severe acne and more advanced signs of aging

Consult a Dermatologist: if you are unsure where to start or have some more complex skin concerns, definitely consult a dermatologist; these medically-licensed professionals can provide you with personalized recommendations and advice and prescribe the most appropriate retinoid for your specific needs

Where To Go From Here:

We mean it when we say it: retinoids are a game-changer. It is without a doubt that they offer a wide-range of benefits for your general skin health and appearance. Whether it’s retinol, retinaldehyde, or retinoic acid, the world of retinoids can make a massive difference. Start your journey today at Scar Healing Institute.
