In the era of personalized medicine, ethnicity and skin type must be heavily considered when formulating an acne scar treatment plan. People of color (POC) are more vulnerable to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

In other words, when their skin is traumatized, the cells that produce pigment in the skin, called melanocytes, overreact and cause local darkening of the skin. This uneven pigmentation is a huge area of concern for many POC.

Acne scar treatment involves the application of controlled trauma to the skin through chemical and surgical methods. Thus, this poses a risk for PIH in non-Caucasian ethnic groups.

To prevent this issue, we recommend using a lightening cream leading up to and after treatment. And, of course, applying sunscreen should be a regular habit as well.

We take all precautions to ensure that you leave our office with even skin, both in texture and color.

Sincerely,
The Scar Healing Institute
