Types of Non-Acne Scars We Treat

Atrophic scars are depressed, pitted marks caused by collagen loss during the skin’s healing process, leading to areas that dip below healthy skin. These scars can vary in depth and shape, from shallow and wide to narrow and deep.

A hypertrophic scar is a thick, raised scar that forms in areas of high skin tension due to an abnormal healing response after injuries, burns, surgeries, or other skin trauma. These scars can become itchy and painful if untreated. Unlike atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars are caused by the overproduction, not depletion, of collagen.

Keloid scars grow beyond the original wound’s boundaries, appearing shiny, rubbery, and elevated. They can develop anywhere, but are most common on the chest and shoulders. Keloids typically appear in shades of pink, red, or darker than the surrounding skin. While they are not harmful to health, they can be itchy and cause discomfort, especially during movement.

Post-surgical scarring is a natural part of the healing process after skin injury. However, issues like raised scars, pigment changes, and uneven texture can lead to aesthetic concerns. While most scars fade over time, more severe cases may need professional scar revision for optimal improvement.

Traumatic scars form after significant skin damage from an injury. Depending on the wound’s size and location, these scars can vary in appearance. In severe cases, traumatic scars may thicken and tighten the skin, restricting movement and potentially causing deformities.

Treatments

Non-Acne Scar Treatments

Subcision is used to treat indented and depressed scars. The provider inserts a needle under the skin to sever the fibrous tethers holding the scar down, allowing it to rise back up to the same level as the surrounding skin. This treatment can be customized depending on size and location of your scarring; for more severe cases, the patented Hazany Liberator may be used to reach deep layers of the skin. Subcision may also be paired with poly-L-lactic acid injections to further promote collagen production and lifting.

At the Scar Healing Institute, we offer Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, CO2 and Fotona 4D lasers—each of which targets a different aspect of scarring. Our lasers can decrease scar volume, smooth out uneven texture, and even get rid of discoloration. Ablative lasers remove the outer layers of the skin while non-ablative lasers target deeper layers without damaging the surface. Multiple sessions may be needed to achieve desired results and healing time varies based on the type of laser used.

Surgical revision is often considered when non-invasive treatments haven’t been effective, and the scar is affecting both appearance and function. The success of the procedure depends on factors like scar type, location, size, and the patient’s skin characteristics. It is important to remember that surgical revision will not completely get rid of the scar, but rather make it less noticeable and more aligned with the surrounding skin.

FAQs

How much does it cost to remove a scar?

The cost of scar removal can vary greatly depending on several factors, including the type, size, and location of the scar, as well as the treatment method chosen. Since each scar is unique, it’s important to consult with a specialist who can assess your specific situation and provide a personalized treatment plan with an accurate cost estimate

Unfortunately, insurance typically does not cover scar removal as it is considered a “cosmetic” procedure. If the scar is the result of an injury, surgery, or another medically necessary condition, some insurance providers may cover part of the cost. However, this can vary depending on your specific plan, so it is best to check directly with your insurance company to understand the specific details.

The healing time for scar removal treatment can vary depending on the type of treatment used and the individual’s healing process. Generally, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months for full recovery. Your provider will provide specific aftercare instructions to help optimize healing and ensure the best results.

Scar removal typically requires multiple sessions, especially for more severe or larger scars. The number of sessions needed depends on the type of treatment and the size and complexity of the scar. Your specialist will assess your individual case and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
